MONTCLAIR, NJ—The Harold and Mimi Steinberg/American Theatre Critics New American Play Award recognizes excellence in playwriting for productions developed in regional theatres.

Scenes and Monologues from the Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award (Applause Books, Aug. 2013, $19.99) presents some of the finest, sharpest scenes and monologues from the award finalists of 2008-2012. The chosen scripts include groundbreaking and contemporary work by promising playwrights such as Sara Ruhl, Tracy Letts, Donald Margulies, Bill Cain, Rinne Groff, Quaira Alegría Hudes, Yussef El Guindi, and Rebecca Gilman. In his Editor’s Note, Bruce Burgun states:

“The initial intention for this book was to provide actors, directors, and theater educators with the most immediate and outstanding material. Scene books tend to have a short shelf life. However, taken together, even the non-practitioner will be struck by the composite portrait of America with all its complexity and current relevance, absurdity and irony. Comfort comes from knowing we are not alone. Insight revolves from experience revealed with uncensored honesty.”

The book is divided into male-female, male-male, female-female scenes as well as male and female monologues and multiple character scenes. Scenes and Monologues can serve as an educational tool and a treat for actors, teachers, students of drama, and theatre lovers alike. Entries from recent hits like Time Stands Still, Water by the Spoonful, and Detroit—as well as lesser-known plays such as 9 Circles, Becky’s New Car, or Perfect Mendacity—are told with ferocity, passion, wit, and supreme insight.

This collection of work from our finest American playwrights illustrates the relevance of theatre in the landscape of today’s society.
