“A stylistically groundbreaking 21st-century musical!” —New York magazine
MONTCLAIR, NJ—Most of the plays and musicals that premiered on Broadway in the middle of the twentieth century were also published as books. They were intended to be read as well as seen. Those editions, which omitted distracting technical information and guidelines for the director, were perfect for reading like a novel. The Applause Libretto Library series has revived the tradition of publishing great Broadway musicals in editions meant to be read and savored. Now, fans of the Broadway musical can enjoy the libretto In the Heights: The Complete Book and Lyrics of the Broadway Musical (Applause Books, April 2013, $16.99).
In the Heights is an exciting musical about life in Washington Heights, a tight-knit community where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open, and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music.
During its acclaimed Off-Broadway and Broadway runs, In the Heights became an audience favorite and critical success. Among the musical’s many accolades are two Drama Desk Awards, a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album, winner of four 2008 Tony Awards (including Best Musical and Best Score), and a nomination for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It’s easy to see why. In the Heights is an authentic and exhilarating journey into one of Manhattan’s most vibrant communities. With universal themes like family, community, and self-discovery, it can be enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds.
Lin-Manuel Miranda (New York City) collaborated with Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim on Spanish translations for the 2009 Broadway revival of West Side Story, and he co-wrote music and lyrics for Bring It On: The Musical. He created the lead role of Usnavi in In the Heights.
Quiara Alegría Hudes (New York City) was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2007 for her play Elliot, a Soldier’s Fugue. Other plays include Water by the Spoonful, 26 Miles, and a children’s musical, Barrio Grrrl!
